Globeducate Students Celebrate UNESCO World Book Day

Globeducate Students Celebrate UNESCO World Book Day

Globeducate students were raring to get reading to celebrate UNESCO´s World Book Day on 23rd April, with a day of reading-focused activities on Friday 21st April.

World Book Day is intended to capture pupils´ attention and interest in books and support the further development of their reading skills, and Globeducate schools have been invited to launch their own reading challenges for students, with activities from reading a new genre or reading aloud to family and/or friends, to taking part in a Book Face Challenge or Extreme Reading Challenge – reading somewhere unusual and extreme, over the weekend or during the holiday, and sharing a photo.

Students each receive a World Book Day Globeducate Reading Challenge booklet, produced in four languages – English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, in which they plan their targets and review their progress over a three-week period.

RIS Rome held their first ever Book Swap – an initiative of the Parents for the Planet team at the school, and a great success. The event spanned the age groups and inspired plans for a repeat event at the Summer Fair.

Children in Key Stage 1 at O Castro British International School had the opportunity to meet Maria Beuster, author of the book "Lumba", about a crocodile who achieved her dream. The children loved hearing the story, asking questions, and participating some story-related fun activities to follow.

At Agora Portals International School in Mallorca, students dressed as their favourite literary characters – from Alice in Wonderland to pirates, and the parent association, AMPA, organised the first Book Trade Fair.

“World Book Day is a much anticipated celebration at Agora Portals International School. It's a day that students and teachers alike come together to engage in literary activities that promote creative thinking, broaden perspectives and offers the whole learning community the opportunity to discover authors  and exchange  exciting new adventures. It provides a platform that promotes a sense of confidence and creativity in our young writers, allowing them the agency to express themselves in unique and meaningful ways.  As a school that celebrates a life-long love of reading, World Book Day holds a very special place in our heart.”

Therase Jenkinson, PYP Coordinator

Children at PASCAL Education Primary School in Lefkosia (Nicosia) took part in the Book Face Challenge and had great fun choosing their favourite book covers.

At ICS Milan, children dressed up, organised book swaps and discussions about favourite books, and wrote short stories for each other to enjoy.
