Stonar School Tops the Table at Academic Olympics

Cheers erupted in the Stonar School team room as they learnt they were the winners of the 2021 Globeducate Academic Olympics. More than 20 schools from Andorra, France, Italy, Portugal, Spain and England met online for the 2021 Globeducate Academic Olympics, hosted by ICS Milan, and Stonar topped the table with Agora Portals International School, Spain, taking second place and ISN Nice, France, taking third.

The focus on this year´s event was Sustainable Development Goal 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. Activities centred around making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. On the first day teams worked on problem-solving challenges to identify sustainable cities and then create an itinerary that would take visitors between each city but with low cost, time and carbon footprint. The second mission was to produce a PSA to encourage the audience to improve the sustainability of their local area. Teams wrote, directed and filmed their messages. The second day focused on maths and science problems and the Stonar team created a 3D skyline of a local Eco-City. The final mission was to create a website that explained sustainability and showcased the work completed over the two days.

Teams took on inventive names from Corpernico and Future Finders to Go Greens, The Symbionts  and ICS EcoWarriors and they each created significant impact, leaving the judges panel with a very hard task!

STEM Coordinator, Ilaria Amendola, said: “Here at ICS Milan, we were absolutely astonished by the quality of the work the teams submitted. As educators, we designed missions that we were hoping would challenge and engage the participants, and, I believe, they all accepted the challenge with great enthusiasm. This made our work as judges harder, obviously, but we were lucky enough to have Kerry Richardson on our side to evaluate the PSAs. Over these two days, we learned a lot from our Globeducate students, and their commitment repaid us for all our efforts.”

Kirsty Bouchard, Stonar School´s Able and Talented Co-ordinator, said, “It was truly impressive to see the group working together to attempt each task. They approached each new mission with enthusiasm and supported one another by listening to each other´s ideas without fear or favour and, as a result, they grew in confidence and friendship. Thank you to ICS Milan for putting on such a truly fantastic event. We are sure that this will mark two days that our students will remember for a long time to come.”

Education Director of Globeducate Oanh Crouch said: “More than 100 students across 22 schools participated in this opportunity of collaboration and creative problem solving. Designing solutions to the real and relevant issues we are facing right now – to be able to create, develop and live in sustainable cities. How remarkable to think that the ideas that have been formulated today will have direct impact on possible solutions for our tomorrow as our students become the change makers we know they will be.”
